Introduction of World Water Day
Water plays an important role in everyone’s life. From the day we are born, we depend on water to survive. Because drinking water is so familiar to us, we take it for granted.
Most of us, intentionally or not, end up wasting water. It is important to understand the importance of water and the fact that it must be saved.
To highlight the importance of water and its conservation, World Water Day is celebrated on March 22. It aims to respond to the concerns of residents without drinking water. The official website of the United Nations says that the 2023 World Water Day aims to accelerate change to solve water and sanitation problems.
History of World Water Day
In 1992, March 22 was declared World Water Day when the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/47/193 of December 22. Since 1993, we celebrate this day every year as Rain Day. of the world to raise awareness about water conservation.
World Water Day 1994-1997
World Water Day 1994 was the beginning of an international program to unite the world to save water. This year, the day was celebrated under the theme “caring for our water resources is everyone’s responsibility”.
World Water Day 1995 was the first time Lesotho held this date on March 22. The theme for this year’s Earth Day is “Women and Water”. The Department of Water Resources has organized two major events to celebrate the day for water pollution and environmental damage.
In 1996, the world celebrated the third WWD. The Philippines joined the program this year by organizing various projects through the PWP (Philippine Water Partnership).
In 1997, the 1st World Water Forum, Marrakech, had a vision for water, life and the environment. There are four sessions – perspectives on global water, and ways to achieve a long-term vision for global water, challenges of the 21st century – celebration of World Water Day and challenges of the 21st century.
World Water Day 1998-2001
WWD 1998 is the sixth annual event of the international event. In line with the recommendations of the 17th meeting of the Sub-Committee on Water Resources of the ACC, UNICEF and UNDESA took the initiative to observe the 1998 WWD.
Massive floods in major rivers around the world in 1998 caused thousands of deaths and extensive damage in India, China and Bangladesh. This year, UNEP brought together UN agencies to address the world at WWD 1999.
In 2000, the second World Water Forum and Ministerial Conference was held in the Netherlands a week before World Rain Day on March 22, 2000. From March 17 to 22, many water experts, politicians, experts and civil servants are meeting in a conference in The Hague from different parts of the world.
In 2001, WHO coordinated the UN agency for the WWD program. The good news of the day is to make important efforts to bring clean water and improve the health of thousands of people who suffer from drinking water.
World Water Day 2002-2005
The theme of WWD 2002 is “Water for Development”. The International Atomic Energy Agency is the leader of the United Nations Agency for WWD 2002. States that are insufficient to destroy water resources in different parts of the planet need planning and integrated water management. UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) is the main organizer of World Water Day 2003.
This day aims to stimulate political and civil action and support a better global understanding to save water and take responsibility. In 2004, the day was organized by the United Nations Disaster Reduction and Management Agency and the World Meteorological Organization.
The main message of World Health Day this year is that weather, climate and water resources can have a negative impact on social development and human health. The United Nations, at its 58th session in December 2003, decided to declare the years 2005 to 2015 the decade of International Action – “Water for Life”. The launch of this initiative was World Water Day 2005.
World Water Day 2006-2009
The theme of WWD 2006 is “Water and Culture” under the auspices of UNESCO. This year’s international celebration drew attention to the fact that there are many ways to use, see and celebrate water, as there are many traditional cultures around the world.
In 2007, water scarcity was the main theme of WWD’s global program. The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) has organized an event to celebrate this day. The ceremony included an opening speech by FAO Secretary-General Jaques Diouf and a video speech from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and Green Cross International President Michail Gorbachev.
In 2008, the UN chose an important theme for the WWD celebration “Cleanliness”. It is a very difficult subject and a big problem. It has been found that lack of hygiene affects more than one in three people in the world. To make people aware about cleanliness, the day was celebrated in Geneva, Switzerland.
WWD 2009 focused on water in transit to build respect, understanding and trust among nations to promote peace and economic prosperity. This year, UNESCO led the work of the program with the support of UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) of the United Nations.
World Water Day 2010-2013
In 2010, the highlight of the WWD event was water quality. On March 22, 2010, UNESCO and WWF-France organized a round table at the headquarters of the organization on the theme “Water quality, life”, this year’s theme is “Clean water for a healthy world” “.
World Water Day 2011 aims to draw international attention to the effects of high population growth, industrial growth, environmental issues such as climate change, global warming, etc. Promoting the theme “water for the community”, the main goal of the program is to encourage ., organizations, communities, people, etc. actively participates in meeting the challenges of water management in cities.
WWD 2012 was celebrated with great enthusiasm around the world. Various countries participated in the event this year. For example: In Thailand, the day is celebrated at the United Nations Conference Center (UNCC), Bangkok, in coordination with ESCAP (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific) and FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization). The United States Embassy in Thailand also participated in the event as a key partner.
The Global Water Partnership (GWP) participated in the event by organizing various activities such as photo contests, water debates, water walks, school competitions, public meetings, etc.
World Water Day 2014-2017
The theme for this year’s WWD is water and energy. Water plays an important role in energy production. The World Water Organization has been investigating the link between these two issues since 2011 in collaboration with EDF.
The 2014 event was held at the UNU headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. UNU and UNIDO organized key activities on behalf of UN-Water.
It is a two-day event (March 20-21). On March 20, the event was “Asia-Pacific Regional Symposium: The Water-Energy Nexus in Asia”. On March 21, it was organized as a one-day event that included expert discussions, a high-level policy group and the launch of the World Water Development Report 2014.
In 2015, the World Water Day website went live. He took the visitor on a journey to learn more about water and sustainable development. The host went through a brief informational and visual text before offering ideas for the WWD program. There is also an events section where organizations, groups or individuals can see events happening in their area.
During the international program of World Water Day 2016, the day was celebrated at UNESCO-IHE by students and staff drawing up a speech about what water means to them. In 2016, the event was held in Geneva at the ILO headquarters on behalf of UN-Water.
In 2017, ESCWA (Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia) organized a regional event to celebrate WWD in collaboration with UNESCO, Ministry of Water and Irrigation of Jordan, Govt. of Sweden and ACWUA (Arab Countries Water Utilities Association). The event took place at the Kempinski Hotel in Amman. The event covered several events including the regional launch of WWDR (World Water Development Report) 2017.
World Water Day 2018-2019
In 2018, the campaign for WWD was called “the answer is in nature”, and attention was drawn to finding natural solutions (NBS) for the water problems we face in the 21st century. The real purpose of this campaign is that NBS (like planting trees, restoring wetlands, etc.) is a sustainable and cost-effective way. NBS will help balance the water cycle and reduce the effects of climate change to improve environmental health.
As the theme of WWD 2019 is “Leave no one behind”, which is in line with the central commitment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which will benefit all people.
World Water Day 2020
World Water Day 2020 focuses on exploring the link between water and climate change. Population growth is a major cause of degradation of natural resources, including water. We must use water efficiently so that everyone has access to it.
Due to the COVID-19 situation, many events have been canceled this year. This year’s UN WWD campaign aims to show how wise use of natural resources can help reduce the risk of floods, droughts, shortages, pollution and combat climate change.
The 2020 WWD United Nations campaign focuses on the importance of hand washing and hygiene as the world faces the outbreak of COVID-19. The campaign’s main advice to everyone is to wash their hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub.
On the occasion of WWD 2020, members of the IWA (International Water Association) organized an online conference on this topic to raise awareness about the importance of water.
World Water Day 2021
World Water Day 2021 is a global online event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Water Retrieval” is the theme for 2021. The main objective of the program is to support the achievement of SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

World Water Day 2022
The theme for World Water Day 2022 is Groundwater: Doing the Invisible. This topic was decided at the 30th annual meeting of UN-Water held in Rome. The meeting was held at the headquarters of IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development).
The aim is to highlight the importance of protecting groundwater resources. Groundwater is still invisible but contributes half of the total drinking water. But today, uncontrolled groundwater exploitation is putting great pressure on these valuable drinking water resources. As a result, the water in the ground is rapidly depleting. World Water Day: Significance
World Water Day reminds us all to value water and contribute to its conservation.
