Vat Savitri Vrat is an important ceremony for married Hindu women which is held on ‘Purnima’ (full moon day) or ‘Amavasya’ (no moon day) in the month of ‘Jyeshtha’ and the traditional Hindu calendar. The fasting period begins on “trayodashi” (thirteenth day) and ends on Purnima or Amavasya. The scriptures say that women who cannot fast for three days can observe vrat from one day to the last day.

Narad Puran states that Vat Savitri Vrat can be observed on both Jyeshta Amavasya and Jyeshta Purnima called Vat Amavasya and Vat Purnima respectively. However, Skanda Puran mentions the tithi as Jyeshta Purnima, while Nirnayamrit mentions Jyeshta Amavasya as the tithi for fasting.

According to legend, there was a king named Ashwapati who ruled a kingdom and had a daughter named Savitri, who was known for her beauty, intelligence and virtue. Savitri is the epitome of devotion and love for her husband. One day, when Savitri was praying in the forest, she saw a young man named Satyavan, and she decided to marry him. Although she knew that Satyavan would die within a year, Savitri chose him and married him. After their marriage, Savitri dedicated herself to being a loving and caring wife. She took care of her husband and parents with great devotion. As years passed, the predicted day of Satyavan’s death arrived. On the day of Satyavan’s death, Savitri accompanied him to the forest. He saw Yamraj, the god of death, take Satyavan’s soul. Savitri begged Yama not to kill her husband, but he refused to fulfill her wish. Undeterred, Savitri continues to follow Yamraj to carry Satyavan’s soul. Yamraj was impressed by Savitri’s devotion and gave her a boon. Savitri insisted that her husband’s life should be restored. Yamraj has no choice but to bring Satyavan back to life. Vat Savitri Vrat Katha shows Savitri’s extraordinary love and devotion to her husband, as well as her dedication to the inevitability of death. This story is often told during the Vat Savitri Vrat festival as married women ask for blessings for the well-being and longevity of their husbands.

History of Vat Savitri

The story of Vat Savitri takes us back to the ancient Hindu mythology mentioned in the Mahabharata. The story is about Savitri, daughter of King Ashwapati and wife of Satyavan. According to legend, Savitri’s husband, Satyavan, was supposed to die a year after their marriage. However, Savitri’s devotion and determination led her to confront Lord Yamraj, the god of death, and asked her to spare her husband’s life. Through her wisdom, intelligence and perseverance, she convinced Lord Yama to bring her husband back to life. This myth shows the strength of a woman’s love and devotion to her husband.

Rituals

On the first day (Thrayodashi) of fasting, add sesame paste and amla (Indian gooseberry), eat Banyan root during Vat Savitri Vrat, if Banyan is not near, fry it on a piece of wood and it is a dish made with turmeric or sandalwood paste. Continue worshiping him for three days in a row, on the fourth day of fasting, wake up early in the morning and take a bath. place the idols of Satyavan-Savitri and Yama under the banyan tree, wear wedding clothes, vermilion and jewelry, pray to the banyan tree and Savitri, the deity of this vrat, sprinkle vermilion on the tree and tie the thread Holy red and yellow color, around the tree trunk. Go 7 rounds around the banyan tree and pray from your heart, break the fast on Purnima day by eating prasad prepared by mixing mango, jackfruit, banana and lemon.
