The Government renamed the Most iconic Mughal Garden of Rashrapati Bhavan as ‘Amrit Udyan’

Located inside the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Mughal Garden knows as Amrit Udyan Delhi is one of the most beautiful gardens to visit. It is also called the “soul” of the royal house. This beautiful garden was originally built by the Mughals. Sir Edwin Lutyens then adapted it for Lady Harding. Covering more than 13 acres with beautiful flowers, trees and grass, it offers a breathtaking view you will never forget. The garden has fountains throughout which add to the peaceful atmosphere.

As mentioned above, the park is only open for a limited time. If you want to discover the beauty of Mughal Gardens, you should visit it in February and March. The Udyanotsav festival takes place during this time, which is worth a visit. This festival has no fixed date or time. But it is done when the park is open. The date and time are announced before the start of the visit. It is advisable to check the internet before visiting the camp.

History of the Udyan

The Mughals were known to appreciate gardens. For Babur Nama, Babur says that his favorite type of garden is the Persian charbagh style (literally, four gardens). The purpose of the charbagh is to create a representation of a global utopia – jannat – in which humans live in perfect harmony with all things in nature.

Defined by their rectilinear plan, divided into four equal parts, these gardens sit on land ruled by the Mughals. From the gardens surrounding the Humanyun Tomb in Delhi to the Nishat Bagh in Srinagar, they are all built in this style, giving them the distinctive name of Mughal gardens.

Why was Mughal Garden Amrit Udyan changed?

As announced by the press secretary of the President, the Rashtrapati Bhavan garden will be named Amrit Udyan. The famous gardens will open to the public on January 31, when President Murmu completed it.

Officials have announced that the Mughal Amrit Udyog complex has been renamed during the 75th Independence Day celebrations as ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’. Changing the field name will give them a new identity, rather than the previous descriptive identity.

The main characteristics of the Amrit Udyan

Rashtrapati Bhavan garden has more than 150 varieties of roses and tulips, Asiatic lilies, Asiatic lilies, daffodil hyacinths and other ornamental flowers. There are more than 70 types of flowers of this season, including bulbous plants and winter flowering plants.

Although roses are an important part, the park also grows 60 of the 101 known species of bougainvillea. Alyssum, daisy, pansy, among others are used for planting and flowering of flower beds. The grass that covered the garden was doob grass, imported from Calcutta (now Kolkata) when the Mughal gardens were planted.

According to the Rashtrapati Bhavan website, “The gardens have nearly 50 varieties of plants, trees and vines, including the Moulsiri tree, the Golden Rain tree, the Flowering Torch tree and many others. Currently, more than 300 permanent and civilian workers are employed for the development and maintenance of the garden.

Interesting facts about Mughal gardens

Located behind the Rashtrapati Bhavan, this garden covers more than 13 acres.


The Mughal Gardens consisted of 4 canals, built with red stone fountains at their junctions.

There are many small and big gardens like Pearl Garden, Butterfly Garden, Circular Garden, etc.


Most of this camp is called Peace Resistance. Its length is 200 m. and the width is 175 m. East. It has gardens on the north and south sides as well as tennis courts and a long garden on the west side.


A herb garden is also located in this park and 33 herb gardens are found here. In this garden, you can see about 10000 plants of eight types of tulips.


Besides that, 70 types of modern flowers and about 300 dwarf trees (bonsai) of 50 types are also found here. Here two canals and two canals run from north to south and from east to west, in the middle of which is the fountain of 6 lotuses at the confluence.

These canals divide the park into four parts. From these sources, water jets rise up to 12 meters.
This garden is divided into four parts based on the structure: – square, long garden, curtain garden, circular garden, etc.

The lawns from Belvedere Estate, Calcutta, were covered with ‘water-drenched’ grass when it was originally laid out.
After the country’s independence in 1947, the name of the Viceroy’s House was changed to Rashtrapati Bhavan.

More than 250 varieties of roses are found in this garden, including the Oklahoma walnut. The color of Oklahoma rose flowers is almost black.

Types of blue roses include Paradise, Blumoon, and Lady X, apart from that, you can also find green roses here.
Here Calendula Antirrhinum, Brassicum, Metucheria, Verbena, Alyssum, Dimorphotheca, Mesembryanthemum, Assolzia, Larksper, Gazzanias, Gerbera, Godetia, Linearia, Viola, pansy, Stock and also a large number of winter flowers such as dahlias, carnations and sweetpies can too.


Over 300 permanent and some time moves for development and maintenance of the Rishtrapati field. The park is open to tourists every year during Udyanotsav in February-March from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.,

But admission is only available until 4 p.m. The park is open every day except Monday. Entrance to this camp is free but you cannot take the bag, large ladies bag, umbrella, water bottle and your food.
