Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin is popularly known as MK Stalin who is the 8th and current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
In addition, Stalin served as the president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) political party.
M.K. Stalin was born on March 1, 1953 in Madras (now Chennai) to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader M. Karunanidhi and Dayalu Ammal. He was educated at the Madras Christian College High School and completed his undergraduate studies at Vivekananda College. In 1973 he received a B. A. Degree in History from Presidential College, Chennai nke Mahadum Madras. On August 1, 2009, he received his doctorate degree from Anna University.
On August 25, 1975, Stalin married Durga, and the couple had two children. His son Udhayanidhi Stalin is a politician who works well in the Kolkata film industry as an actor and producer.
His political career started in his early teens when he started the DMK Gopalapuram youth wing in a tea shop with many friends. At the age of 14, he campaigned for his uncle, Murasoli Maran, in the 1967 elections. In 1973, Stalin was elected to the general committee of the DMK.
He came into the limelight when he was imprisoned in the Madras Central Jail under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) for protesting the accident in 1976. He was beaten up in the jail in view of another DMK prisoner, C. Chittibabu died from his injuries and from the torture of the police while protecting him. He took his final year permit test in prison. Stalin established the youth wing of the DMK. Stalin contested the Assembly elections unsuccessfully in a by-election in Chennai. In 1989, Stalin also contested the Assembly elections from the Thousand Fires constituency, but won this time. But the DMK government was removed from office in 1991 before completing its five years. He ran for the third time in the same Assembly constituency, but was defeated by the AIADMK under Jayalalithaa. Again in 1996, Stalin won the election as a representative of the Thousand Light Constituency.
In 2011, Stalin changed his constituency for the first time in his political career, moving from the Thousand Light constituency to Kolathur constituency, outside the city of Chennai.
Stalin increased the plus-two pass percentage from 55 to 72 and changed the general perception about the standard of Corporation schools in Chennai when he was the city mayor.
It has built nine aircraft at a total cost of Rs. 94.5 crores on 49 minor bridges at a cost of Rs. 4.92 crores to ease traffic congestion in the city. He also successfully managed the Hogenekkal Water Project with financial assistance from Japan.
