Tragedy struck the family in 1942 when her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, suffered a heart attack, leaving a young family behind. Lata was only 13 years old and started working to support her family.

A close friend of Mangeshkar’s family, Master Vinayak, who also owned the Navyug Chitrapat film studio, helped him pursue a career in singing.

Lata Mangeshkar recorded her first song, Naachu Yaa Gade, for the Marathi film “Kiti Hasaal” in 1942. However, the song was deleted in the finale of the movie.

Master Vinayak got Lata a small role in the Marathi film Pahili Mangalaa-gaur in 1942 in which she also sang. Although she started her career as a Marathi singer and actress, few people knew that one day this young lady would grow up and dominate Hindi cinema music.

Coincidentally, her first Hindi song was released in a Marathi film. The song is Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu from the movie Gajaabhau (1943).

He moved to Mumbai in 1945, when Master Vinayak shifted his headquarters to the city. During this time, he also started taking Hindustani music lessons with Ustad Amanat Ali Khan.

Vinayak’s death in 1948 marked another void in Lata’s life and her early days in the powerful Hindi film industry. She performed the first song of her career, Aayega Aanewala, in the movie Mahal, in 1949.

This song not only made Lata remarkable, but also changed the image of Indian musicians. He helped other musicians get the respect they deserve.

Building on the success of her first musical, Aayega AAnewala (1949), Lata Mangeshkar worked with several musical directors in the 1950s. Lata won her first Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song Aaja re Pardesi from the film Madhumati in 1958. Salil Chaudhary composed music for this movie.

Lata sang one of the greatest songs of her career – Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya – in the 1960 film Mughal-e-azam, followed by another rousing number “Ajeeb Dastaan ​​​​​​​​Hai Yeh” from the film Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai the one year.

In 1962, She won his second Filmfare Award for the song “Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil” composed by Bees Saal Baad. In the wake of the Sino-Indian War in 1962, when Lata sang the patriotic song “Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo” in front of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1963, the then Indian president broke down in tears.

The 1960s also marked the beginning of his association with renowned music director Laxmikant-Pyarelal for whom he would compose more than 700 songs over the next 35 years. Mangeshkar’s success continued through the 1970s and 1980s and he also entered regional languages.

Apart from regular vocals, he has also performed in many live concerts around the world. In the 1990s, many female singers entered Bollywood, but none could topple the queen of Hindi cinema. He continued to perform well into the new millennium, recording his first Hindi song with Tamil composer Ilaiyaraaja in 2001.
