Hockey as we know it today (modern hockey) originated in England. Scoring the Irish is the true granddaddy of hockey. In 1861, the first hockey club was founded in Black-Heath. England and Ireland played the first international match in 1895. Hockey was first included in the modern Olympics in 1908.
History of Hockey in India
Hockey came to India through the British regiments and quickly became one of the most popular sports in the country. Hockey is Britain’s favorite sport after cricket. The first hockey stadium in India was established in Calcutta in 1885-1886, followed soon after by Bombay and Punjab.
The Indian hockey team won their first gold medal without conceding a single goal in their Olympic debut at the 1928 Amsterdam Games. Indian hockey legend Dhyan Chand is the epitome of this dominance. From 1928 to 1956, the fierce Indian hockey team won six gold medals in a row while winning 25 games in a row. In this golden era, India managed to concede 178 goals to concede just seven.
It was the best era of Indian hockey when India reached the top level in world hockey and produced some of the best players in the game. During this reign, Balbir Singh was one of the players who did wonders for his team by performing well in many matches.
Balbir Singh was an integral part of the great Indian teams of 1948, 1952, and 1956. He reached his peak in 1952 when he scored five goals in a 6-1 win over the Netherlands in Helsinki. It was one of the most memorable moments for Balbir Singh and for all of India.
