Father’s day – Discuss about History and Celebration of the Day

About Father’s Day

Father’s Day, in the United States, a holiday (the third day in June) to honor fathers. Credit for the holiday’s origin is often given to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, whose father, a Civil War veteran, raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth. It is said that it was in the year 1909 that he listened to the sermon on Mother’s Day, which became a holiday at that time. Local religious leaders supported the idea, and the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, the month of Dodd’s father’s birthday.

In 1924, the American Press. Calvin Coolidge gave his support to the event, and in 1966 Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson issued a statement recognizing the day. It became a national holiday in 1972, when Pres. Richard Nixon signed legislation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Although originally a religious celebration, Father’s Day has been marketed with sending greeting cards and giving gifts.

Some practice the tradition of wearing a red rose to show that one’s father is alive or a white rose to show that he is dead. Other men – for example, grandfathers or parents who have performed the role of parents – are also honored on this day. Some Roman Catholics continued to celebrate St. Joseph, March 19, as a tribute to the fathers.

The beginning of Father’s Day

The campaign celebrating the nation’s fathers has never had that kind of enthusiasm – perhaps because, as one florist explained, “fathers don’t have the same emotions as mothers”.

On July 5, 1908, a church in West Virginia hosted the nation’s first official event to honor fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who died in the previous December’s explosion at the Fairmont Mines. Coal Company at Monongah, but. it is a one time celebration and not an annual holiday.

The following year, a Spokane, Washington woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by her widowed husband, tried to establish Mother’s Day for male parents. He approached local churches, the YMCA, businessmen and government officials to get support for his idea, and it was successful: Washington State celebrated the first national Father’s Day in the state on June 19, 1910.

Little by little, the holidays spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by telegraphing the flag in Spokane while pressing the button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge encouraged state governments to celebrate certain fathers.

Today, Father’s Day is celebrated in the United States on the third Sunday in June: Father’s Day 2021 falls on June 20. In other countries, especially in Europe and Latin America, fathers are honored on St. Joseph, a traditional Catholic celebration that falls on March 19.
