The BJD has a history of frequent alliances and alliances with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and formed the NDA government at the Centre. Although part of its alliance with BJP, BJD is known as one of the secular politicians in the country. Currently, the BJD, led by Naveen Patnaik, is ruling Odisha State, winning a majority of 108 legislative seats in the 2009 elections for the Odisha Legislative Assembly. It also won 14 seats in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

After the death of his father Biju Patnaik, Janata Dal leader Naveen Patnaik contested the Lok Sabha elections from Aska parliamentary constituency in Odisha. He is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Steel and Mines, a member of the Standing Committee on Commerce and a member of the Library Committee of the 11th Lok Sabha. A year later, the Janata Dal split and formed the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) named after his father. Later, the BJD, in alliance with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, did well in the general election and Patnaik became the Union Minister of Mines in the late Atal Bihari’s office.
In the 2000 Assembly elections, the BJD won a majority of seats in alliance with the BJP in the Odisha Assembly elections. Naveen resigned from the Union portfolio and was unanimously nominated as the leader of the alliance and sworn in as the Chief Minister of Odisha.
The NDA-led BJP lost the 2004 general elections, but the alliance led by Naveen Patnaik won the state assembly elections and went on to become the president. During this issue, the differences between the partners became more and more apparent, which led to a split.
During the elections for the Lok Sabha elections in Odisha and the assembly elections in 2009, the BJD left the NDA after severing ties with the BJP and joined a growing third party that made up the Left Front in some areas. region. . The BJD won a landslide victory in both the Vidhan Sabha (State Assembly) and the Lok Sabha elections in 2009, winning 14 out of 21 Lok Sabha seats and 103 out of 147 assembly seats and was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Odisha. “More than half a million tribal girls are studying in our guest houses. Farmers are also the backbone of our state and their hard work has won the state Krishi Karman award four times. Odisha is the only state where farmers’ income has doubled,” he added. According to him, Odisha produces the maximum amount of iron and aluminum for the country. “Odisha has increased its steel production almost ten times in the last two decades and has helped the country during the COVID crisis. Odisha has provided life-saving oxygen to 17 states during the pandemic. In the manufacturing sector, Odisha attracts the most investment in the country,” Patnaik said. Odisha is preparing to host the World Cup of Hockey twice in a row and has established high-level institutions in various sports.
“Odisha, the sports capital of India, has set a precedent for other states to follow. Excellence in Odisha is a symbol not only Odisha but the country is proud of,” boasted the CM of Odisha.
Despite the BJP’s strong presence across the country, the Biju Janata Dal, under the leadership of Naveen Patnaik, won as many as 112 out of 146 seats (postponed elections for 1) in the Odisha Legislative Assembly and 12 out of 21 Lok Sabha. chair. in the 2019 Indian general elections.
