Arvind Kejriwal is India’s anti-corruption activist turned politician who is the seventh Chief Minister of Delhi. He is the national organizer of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a political party launched in November 2012. Kejriwal was a social worker long before he entered the world of politics and the main reason he got involved in this field was to be able to serve the country.

When he was a teenager, it was difficult for him to choose a career: medicine or engineering. Finally, he decided to become an engineer and decided to join the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Stubbornly refusing to take another college entrance exam, he only appeared for the IIT entrance and passed in the first attempt.

As a student, he realized that his passion was not to make money, but to serve his community. He started working in the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and was also involved in social activities. His contribution to the “Parivartan” movement earned him the Ramon Magsaysay Award

for Emerging Leadership. Later, he became involved with Anna Hazare and India Against Corruption (IAC) following which he started the Aam Aadmi movement. He became the Chief Minister of Delhi in December 2013 but resigned after just 49 days

Arvind Kejriwal: Childhood, Family and Education

Arvind Kejriwal was born on August 16, 1968 to a middle-class family in Siwani, Haryana to Gobind Ram Kejriwal and Gita Devi. Kejriwal’s father is an electrical engineer, a graduate of Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra. Arvind Kejriwal studied at Campus School in Hisar and Holy Child School in Sonipat. In 1985, Kejriwal passed the IIT-JEE exam and secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 563. He graduated from IIT Kharagpur in Mechanical Engineering. In 1989 Kejriwal joined Tata Steel in Jamshedpur but in 1992 he resigned from his post to prepare for civil service examination. Kejriwal met Mother Teresa in Kolkata and joined the Missionaries of Charity and Ramakrishna Mission in North East India and Nehru Yuva Kendra.

He is married to fellow Sunita from Mussoorie National Academy of Administration. He is an IPS officer. They are parents of two children – Harshita (daughter) and Pulkit (son).

  • Kejriwal is a lecturer of IIT (Indian Institute of Technology)-Kharagpur. He graduated in engineering from the school. He was hired by Tata Steel in 1989 and got posted in Jamshedpur. He resigned in 1992 to prepare for the civil service examination. He joined the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) in 1995.
  • While working on his job, he met Mother Teresa in Kolkata and worked as a volunteer for her Missionaries of Charity for about two months. While working as a tax accountant (IT), he established a non-governmental organization (NGO) called Parivartan with a donation of Rs 50,000 from his relatives.
  • The aim of the NGO is to get people to stop paying bribes to tax officials and get the services through Parivartan. Even as an IT worker, he vowed not to take his peon job but to clean his office and throw the garbage in the household waste bin himself.
  • Kejriwal usually tries to avoid meetings so much that he does not celebrate his birthday or that of his children. Kejriwal is a fan of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan. A cinephile, he enjoys watching comedy. According to his colleagues, Kejriwal sleeps only four hours a day.
  • Suffering from diabetes, Kejriwal follows a strict vegetarian diet and regularly practices Vipassana meditation.

Kejriwal’s carrier

Arvind Kejriwal joined the Indian Revenue Authority (IRS) in 1995 as Associate Director of Income Tax after completing the civil service examination. As long as he did not leave the job for at least two years after returning to work, he was granted two years’ paid leave in November 2000 to continue his studies.

He will be required to pay the wages paid during the holiday if he does not comply with this agreement. In November 2002, he resumed his duties. Kejriwal claims that he has been unemployed for over a year and continues to earn money without doing any work. Kejriwal was allowed to take another 18 months of unpaid leave. By not taking action for three years, the Indian government said Kejriwal violated the terms of his original agreement. 

Kejriwal said his 18 months of service and 18 months of unpaid leave equaled the required three years. He went on to say that it was an attempt to tarnish his reputation because he had participated in India’s anti-corruption campaign. The dispute lasted for years before it was finally resolved in 2011 when he used loans from friends to pay for his release from the project. Kejriwal paid the required amount of Rs. 927,787, although he insisted that this was not an admission of guilt.

After entering politics, Kejriwal said in 2013 that he chose public service to earn millions as an income tax inspector. The IRS announced that it was never brought up to the tax commission, which sparked controversy.

  • In 1999 he started an NGO called Parivartan that helps people with ration cards, electricity and income tax.
